ACTION: STAKE GROUND
Project 1 is INSULATED PALLET, found wooden pallets insulated with layers of cardboard (2-3 inches) and waterproofed above and below with plastic tarp. When placed side by side, these pallets have the capacity to stake ground in a modular grid pattern. They act as insulating, drainable platforms for tents or other occupation strategies.
TOTAL COST: $5.00 for bolts and screws
ACTION: COLLAPSE FOR MOBILITY
Project 2 is BUBBLE WRAP COLLAPSIBLE, built on INSULATED PALLET to pop up to house public activities. The prototype was originally built to be the winterized self-service desk for the medical tents at Zuccotti Park, but the design is multi-purpose. It becomes a modular unit when bolted to similar units. When configured in a closed shape, the result is an inhabitable wall as well as 4’-0” thick air membrane for an interior courtyard.
BUBBLE WRAP COLLAPSIBLE is made from hinged 1x3s with pegged diagonal bracing. Its skin bubble wrap shingles heat welded between plastic for insulated transparency. The walls roll up when the structure is collapsed and adhere to the frame with Velcro when in position.
TOTAL COST: $150.00
ACTION: BE TEMPORARY
INFLATABLE G.A. is a temporary structure to cover the OCCUPY WALL STREET general assembly OR ANY OTHER PUBLIC GATHERING. It acts symbolically—inflated above the general assembly it assumes a temporary presence to the rest of the city—and practically—shielding from the elements and providing a space to store the heat of bodies during the winter. INFLATABLE G.A. can be a message board and a call to gather. When the gathering has finished, it modestly deflates, allows the city to take back its public space, and waits to be relocated for another public meeting.
INFLATABLE G.A. is transparent, made from heat-welded PLASTIC and TRANSPARENT SKIN.
TOTAL COST: $900.00 (18 FOOT PUMPS + tarp +PLASTIC ROLL)
